World Poetry Celebrates CR Avery from Canada!

Ariadne’s Notes: A fun World Poetry Café Show with a look into the past and future! On September 22, 1:30-2 PM PST, CFRO, 100.5 FM, we welcomed the amazing CR Avery featuring  his 15th Album, Angels Didn’t Scare Me and talking about his extensive touring schedule.

Many years ago when Coop Radio was at Pigeon Park in Vancouver and the World Poetry Show was just beginning, CR Avery was one of our first interviews. He brought his band up the winding circular staircase with all their instruments and I think, a  small piano.  Alejandro Mujica Olea was  the host and I translated the conversation  from English to Spanish . CR spoke in hip hop or something  similar and I was hard pressed to do the translation. To top it off, we had our resident audience of three mice who would come out of their hole  for the duration and entertainment of the show. We had a lot of adventures at Pigeon Park! CR Avery also remembered the interview and asked me to speak a bit in Spanish so he could hear the language again-so much fun. Unfortunately,  the poet  on tour, Henry Beissel  was not able to attend but we read his bio and played a song from Susan Cogan’s CD Fields of Friendship and music from CR Avery’s wonderful new album.   Thanks to all our World Poetry Team, Neal Ryon, Victor Schwartzman and volunteer Sharon Rowe. E-poet Vani Pradeep from India had her poem: Cry of The Roses was read on the air for World Peace Day.

Publicist Heather Kitching writes:  “CR probably needs no introduction, being as he’s rather an icon of music, poetry, spoken word and beatboxing in Vancouver….but he’s completely outdone himself on this record.  Gorgeously bleak (at times) portraits of life among the forgotten classes and incredibly production by Ben Mink and Steve Dawson.  The news releases on this artist is on my web site at www.heatherkitching.com

C.R. Avery: Outlaw Hip-Hop Harmonica Player, Beatbox Poet, Punk Piano Player, String Quartet Raconteur, Rock & Roll Matador, Playwright

Whether performing to thousands at the Royal Albert Hall or the lucky few who made it inside the packed past capacity speakeasy, C.R. Avery is a unique, raw and dynamic performer. His genius lies in many genres – blues, hip-hop, spoken word and rock & roll. He is a one-man band, but one for this generation; with the rare ability to sing poetic verse while beatboxing simultaneously while pounding the piano and adding harmonica like a plot twist. A multi-talented front man for his Legal Tender String Quartet; a crazed lead singer/harp player for his rock & roll band The Special Interest Group; a lyrical dynamo & the musical backbone of the spoken word trio Tons of Fun University.

From musical beginnings in his late teens, C.R. Avery has recorded over fifteen albums as well as writing & directing six hip-hop operas, which were mounted and performed from New York’s Bowery to L.A.’s South Central.  He has toured throughout Canada (including almost every major folk festival) the USA and Europe (headlining or opening for Billy Bragg, Buck 65, and Sage Francis) and garnered the attention of music peers the likes of Tom Waits (“…he’s blowin’ my mind”); blues harp trail blazer Charlie Musselwhite (“…no one plays harmonica like him… no one…”); and folk legend Utah Phillips (“…raw talent”).

His incredible live performances have been described as Bob Dylan in the body of Iggy Pop; colliding with Little Walter, the Beastie Boys and Allen Ginsberg.  Every show is all or nothing and his fearless approach to all genres of music both on stage and in the studio proves the longevity of this talented, astonishing creator has so much more to come.
