Simplicity

A thread bare cushion heart
once colored, a dark maroon
faded since into a dirty cream
clothes the words I love you
worn now bone white,
yet poignant having withstood
rain, sun, and snow
the breadth of nature.
It lingered today
a statement naked on gravel.
Simple: love survives,
even if borne on dirt and grime.

The mitt lies
seasoned, thinned toward the centre
like his hair that callused hands have tussled
over and over
a tic, force-fed by life, marriage, and fate,
that bares him softly.
A paper cutting that fills space
between trophies that sequence
rise and fall, glory denied, desire and definition
in equal measure.
Simple: We all reminisce in time
what we delve on will feed our soul.

Some broken glass
chipped brick entrenched within graffiti layered walls
culverts an air of broken dreams,
blood stains on the sidewalk
the size of a nosebleed
are all that’s left.

A teacher’s board
a mother’s son
a father in waiting
wiped clean.
Withered flowers droop in a bouquet,
here, sometimes,
a dry reminder for wet eyes.
Simple: memories fade, slow
when, the pain in passing is strong.

Glasses thinly coated with fingerprints
lens cracked deep, strewn lazy, across bound covers
comedy, romance, tragedy and pain
set to fit perfect any affliction.
Yet here, the eyes narrow
for a breath of words
and a short sight of reason and rhyme
Words and thoughts remain out of focus for now.
Simple: Mark the time you have well
ample prose and sound to unfold for when, the days draw thin lines on remembrance.

The skull grins widely,
tipped within the yellow streaks of a T-shirt
two sizes too large
arms that float one over the other,
grass blanketed from last night’s rain
There are arms, legs, lips and faces
that, float in and out of eyes.
Hearts that hold the warmth of summer,
skin deep.
Linger now, and remain silent awhile.
Simple: The sweet moments that pass, carefree,
when in and out of love, are weathered soon enough.
