Ariadne’s note: I want to welcome Edna, a long term supporter who has recently become a World Poetry Member. I am touched by the number of poets who have sent poems for the displays, given much needed positive support for years and are now becoming members. | About Edna Kovacs, Ph.D.Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Edna Kovacs received her B.A. in Anthropology from Northwestern University. As the recipient of the Bliss Carmen Poetry Award she was awarded a scholarship to attend the Banff Arts Centre. She holds a Masters in Education with specific endorsement in learning disabilities from the University of Illinois at Chicago and a Ph.D. in Expressive Arts with a specialization in Multicultural Education from the Union Institute and University.
She has been a certified journal instructor since 2000 and has worked at Emanuel Hospital in Portland, Oregon with a Regional Arts and Culture Council Arts in Healthcare Consortium Grant as well as with at-risk youth in the Portland Public Schools. She is a member of the National Association For Poetry Therapy and ORTESOL.
Edna is the author of three books on writing including the groundbreaking Writing Across Cultures: A Handbook on Writing Poetry and Lyrical Prose, Writing With Multiple Intelligences and In A Place Called Sanctuary. Her haiku chapbook, Mandalas, won the Cicada Chapbook Award.
An extraordinary teacher who has a gift for providing writers with new insights into their craft as well as new understandings of themselves, Edna has taught students of all ages through the National Endowment for the Arts’ Artists-in-Education Programs, the Oregon Council For The Humanities’ Chautauqua in the Schools Program, Portland Public Schools, Young Audiences of Oregon, Community Centers, Special Education Projects and in Elder Hostel Programs. She currently teaches in the English Language and Culture Program at Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon and leads Journal to the Self workshops to cancer survivors at Compass Oncology Northwest Cancer Specialists at St. Vincent’s and Good Samaritan hospitals.

Blue Heron
Leaving the path around
Burrard Bay, slick with
goose dung, I’m drawn
into a world of trees.
Leaves quake
with morning rain
black squirrels blink
between dark boughs.
The room widens into a ravine.
I follow the muddy footpath
to a serene autumn lake
where whirligigs flit
above beaver-eaten logs.
A fawn pauses in the reeds
sharing the secrecy
of water-lilies.
Suddenly, a whoosh of wings—
the lithe body and minaret neck
of a blue heron rising
her wings wide
across the water.

Such vivid imagery!
It takes me right to the muddy path. So lovely!
Edna, this made me think of the lake near Ypsilanti, Michigan, where my daughter’s family takes me every time I visit. There are so many different types of water fowl and other wildlike there amongst the many marshes. Also great playgrounds for the kids (and grandma’s too!). Thank you for your inspiration.
