World Poetry Youth Team Grand Opening!

A great start to our new venue at UBC!
A beautiful large room with round tables and large windows, thanks to Allan Cho who has given us a new home at UBC.

The First Nations Elder Larry Grant gave a moving welcome as well as a bit of an historical overview. Moving and inspiring letters were read from the World Poetry International Youth team members, Samarenda Patra, Alaha Ahrar and supporter Jaypee Belarmino  as well as letters from the PremierMackenzie Yoon, ( performed her moving songs to a receptive audience.  World Poetry Lifetime Achievment Award Winner, editor and educator Bernice Lever gave an informative workshop on editing. Our partners, VAHMS Winnie Chueng shared a message on her phone from Dr. Jan Walls, explained about ancient Chinese poetry and read a poem of her own. The Vancouver Tagore Society with Raihan Akhter mentioned the relationship between World Poetry and the Tagore Society and read a poem,  new community partners, Cinevolution Film and Media Ying brought greetings and spoke of future collaborations with poetry and multimedia presentations.

The incomparable Dr. Ray Hsu gave a unique reading on the letters of congratulations.

We are building toward the World Poetry Canada International Festival in April. Ideas for display cases, the art gallery and outreach to students at UBC, the lower mainland and around the world are most welcome. Poets, writers , musicians, filmmakers, dancers, actors and others are more than welcome to join with us.

Our great thanks to Sion Kang, assistant to Allan Cho from UBC who was so helpful and helped make the event go smoothly. The next World Poetry Youth event will be on the  24 November 1-3pm Lillooet room, 301 (go through the Commons Rooms) Irving K.
