World Poetry Celebrates Wolf Spirit Films!

Ariadne’s Notes!  The World Poetry Cafe 100.5 FM at 1:30 pm PST, Feb. 13 celebrated the BC FILMMAKER GORDON LOVERIN WHO SELECTED TO REPRESENT CANADA IN PRESTIGIOUS BERLINALE FILM FESTIVAL PROGRAM. We also celebrated his producing director, Pamela Jones for directing his moving film, the Blue Rose. Worldwide listeners also tuned in to hear this remarkable story about the films and the impact that Indigenous films are having. Gordon Loverin also gave an important history in the difficulties of First Nations people over many years. It was meaningful to me because of our family ties with the Yupik Nation in Alaska and the effects that the persecution has had on our family. It is so wonderful to see history being shared thanks to all the indigenous, courageous filmmakers.

Don’t miss the show here!

“Breaking news: Vancouver, February 4th, 2020 — It’s not every day you get summoned by the Consul General of Germany, but that’s what happened to BC filmmaker Gordon Loverin. Now he is off to Berlinale, one of the biggest feature film festivals and markets in the world to represent Canada.

“It was surreal”, says Loverin. “We invited Dr. Klaus Schmidt, Consul General for Germany in Vancouver to the screening of the documentary I directed called, Beyond Human Power. Two days later we were in his office, a short time after that, I got the call that I was chosen as one of the twenty-five filmmakers from around the world, and the only Canadian in a delegation hosted by the prestigious Goethe Institute.” Loverin will have meetings set up with German filmmakers and production companies with the goal of sharing information about the film industry in Canada, and to help facilitate collaborations and co-productions.

“I’m excited because two of the projects I’ll be pitching are set in the Yukon,” says Loverin. “It’ll take time, but if we can get funding and roll, it’ll be a boon for the area.”

Loverin, who is from the Tlingit and Tahltan First Nations, has strong ties to the Yukon and was invited to screen two of his films at the Available Light Film Festival in Whitehorse this past weekend. Beyond Human Power, which is now screening on CBC Gem, is a documentary feature that centres on Canada’s anti-potlatch law, and features the Yukon’s Dakhká Khwáan Dancers and the Daghalhaan k’e dance group and features the Yukon’s Dakhká Khwáan Dancers and the Daghalhaan k’e dance group. Loverin’s short film The Blue Rose, directed by his producing partner, Pamela Jones, is about a young woman using boxing to overcome childhood trauma.

“We created Wolf Spirit Films to bridge cultures,” says Loverin. “This is a perfect example of how entertainment can bring people together.”

I also appreciated the kindness shown to the talented Afghan Filmmaker Rahmat Hardari who needed encouragement to start making his films again.

Wolf Spirit Films is going to The 70th annual Berlinale – Berlin International Film Festival which is scheduled to take place from February 20th to March 1st, 2020.

Before You Know It, the film will be released in Vancouver on Friday, October 18 at the Vancity Theatre. Unfortunately, I could not find a poster.

In this everchanging film, full of surprises, stage manager Rachel Gurner (Hannah Pearl Utt) still lives in her childhood apartment above the theater her family owns and operates in New York City. Level-headed Rachel is the only thing standing between her family — her off-kilter actress sister Jackie (Jen Tullock), her eccentric playwright father Mel (Mandy Patinkin), and her deadpan preteen niece Dodge (Oona Yaffe) — and utter chaos. Then, in the wake of a sudden family tragedy, Rachel and Jackie learn their presumed-deceased mother (Judith Light) is not just alive but thriving as a soap-opera star. Also starring Mike Colter and Alec Baldwin. Directed By: Hannah Pearl Utt. Written By: Hannah Pearl Utt, Jen Tullock.

As Victor says: he loves a film from New York!

MONOS, a fascinating film opening on Saturday, October 18, at Van City Theatre in Vancouver BC, Canada.

This powerful film shows the possibilities of mindsets and change.

MONOS, Alejandro Landes’ awe-inspiring third feature, is a breathtaking survivalist saga set on a remote mountain in Latin America. The film tracks a young group of soldiers and rebels — bearing names like Rambo, Smurf, Bigfoot, Wolf and Boom-Boom — who keep watch over an American hostage, Doctora (Julianne Nicholson).

The teenage commandos perform military training exercises by day and indulge in youthful hedonism by night, an unconventional family bound together under a shadowy force known only as The Organization. After an ambush drives the squadron into the jungle, both the mission and the intricate bonds between the group begin to disintegrate. Order descends into chaos and within MONOS the strong begin to prey on the weak in this vivid, cautionary fever dream.

With a rapturous score by Mica Levi (only her third, after UNDER THE SKIN and JACKIE), director Alejandro Landes examines the chaos and absurdity of war from the unique perspective of adolescence, recalling LORD OF THE FLIES and BEAU TRAVAIL in a way that feels wholly original. Landes brings together a diverse young cast of both seasoned professionals (including Hannah Montana’s Moisés Arias) and untrained neophytes and thrusts them into an unforgiving, irrational and often surreal environment where anything can happen — even peace. World Poetry Celebrates the Amazing Ruth Kozak!

Ariadne’s Notes: On August 1st, the World Poetry Cafe radio show,  CFRO 100.5 FM, welcomed the exceptional Ruth Kozak to the show at 1 pm PST! We were lucky  to have her on the show since she is leaving at the end of the month for Greece , Wales and time permitting, Crete.  Ruth read several poems and part of of her beautiful volumes on Alexander the Great, the Shadow of the Lion. When she was on our last show, she described an (imagined) encounter with Alexander the Great which seemed magical and real to me. I hope she sees him again on the trip. The show also featured e-poet ,Paramananda Mahanta from India and Egyptian filmmaker Tarek Mounib, Free Trip to Egypt. Also a new story by Sharon Rowe for her second book!

On behalf of the World Poetry Team, celebrating our 21st year on the air, we wish Ruth a wonderful trip filled with knowledge and joy.
