A graduate of Sarah Lawrence College, Jill has lived in many places . She has been a recording artist. a Broadway show writer, a broadcaster (CBC), a performance poet, a pet photographer, a creative writing instructor (Vancouver Community College) and, most recently, a rug muralist. Here is the poem, a sonnet, that begins her latest book, a memoir titled “Confessions of a Love Addict.”
LOVE GHOST
As unexpected as an early frost.
Or someone dying in a hit-and-run.
His presence in my life is never lost.
Despite the months of self-inflicted fun.
Like weeds, some loves will never go away.
They may lie dormant, hiding underground.
But give it time and suddenly one day
They sprout again and spin your world around.
“Not me,” I say. “I’ve done that dance before.
“I wish him well but not in my embrace.
How strong I sound – like surf against the shore.
Such raw determination on my face!
But then the phone line flickers, soft and dim
And damned if I’m not praying that it’s him.
